INTRODUCTION
On 6 December 2000 a new Municipal Council came into being, namely the Lephalale Municipality. This new Municipality is the result of an amalgamation of the previous two municipalities, namely Ellisras/Marapong Transitional Local Council and Ellisras/Tswelopele Transitional Local Council.

The Lephalale Municipality is the biggest municipality in the Limpopo Province, previously known as the Northern Province, in terms of geographical size, namely 19 605 square kilometers. Lephalale has a population of 105 000.
The main town in the municipality is Lephalale (Ellisras), situated between 23 degrees 30` and 24 degrees 00` south latitude and 27 degrees 30`and 28 degrees 00`east longitude. Distinctive bushveld landscape stretches from the Limpopo river in the west to the Waterberg in the south east. Lephalale town is positioned west of the Mokolo river, a tributary to the Limpopo river, 820 meters above sea level.
